Whether you like it or not, people do judge a book by it’s cover – or in this case, a company by it’s identity. In some cases, you may have just seconds to capture your audience and tell them as much as you can about your company.
Your identity - the combination of your logo, typeface, colours and imagery – can tell a potential customer how serious you are about presentation, quality, and attention to detail. If your graphic material portrays these qualities, then they can assume that your product or service will also.
Your identity will start with your logo. People often think that a logo has to illustrate everything about what they do, and end up making it too complex. While some logos effectively pull this off, the main purpose of a logo is to be a memorable imprint in an audience’s mind conveying a visual message about your brand. Your message may be complex, but the way in which you communicate it needs to be simple.
Once you have a great logo and a strong identity, it means absolutely nothing if it is not used consistently. Every form of visual communication that leaves your office should be treated with your identity – business cards, stationery, invoices, signage, brochures, website, email signatures, even fax headers. Consistency with your identity will create a comfort zone for your audience – a place to come back to time and again.
